The Greek landscape, the combination of sea and nature, the picturesque alleys of an island in the Cyclades, or the volcano of Santorini and the Caldera, were always among the reasons that foreigners are seeking to acquire a property in Greece. However, depending on the buyers’ country of origin, one can distinguish various patterns of preferences.
For instance, according to a relative research report by the Greek Union of Certified Brokers and Experts, which detailed the transactions of a two-year period, people from the UK and Switzerland, have shown a greater preference to acquire a house in region of the Peloponnese (mainland Greece), like Mani and Messinia. Meanwhile, the Serbs and Germans prefer a house in Northern Greece, like the Chalkidiki Peninsula. Similarly, Arabs, Americans, Italians and French buyers are looking to buy a luxury summer house in Mykonos and Santorini. On the other hand, many people from Israel buy properties as an investment. Another important conclusion from the research is that many buyers from Germany and the UK were pensioners.

Mykonos is a prime destination among foreign visitors and buyers of summer houses, with luxury being a key ingredient of the island. Its capital is “Chora”, located in the western part of the island. Mykonos had a population of 10,134 people in the latest census of 2011. The island’s area is 106 square kilometers, while its coastline has a length of 89 kilometers. Mykonos was one of the first Greek islands, which was developed as a tourism destination. Already, since the 1960s, tourists flocked to the island by the thousands. Today, Mykonos’ night life is one of the most vibrant in Europe. One of most prominent areas of the island is the so called “Little Venice”, famous for its resemblance with the italian city of Venice. Among the most known beaches of Mykonos are: Agios Sostis, Panormos, Lia, Kalo Livadi, Ftelia, Agrari, Agia Anna, Super Paradise, Paragka, Ornos and of course the most glamorous one, Psarou. Mykonos is a 30-minute flight from Athens, or 3 hours via a high-speed ferry.
The island’s housing market is as vibrant as the island’s tourism, being one of the most popular destinations for luxury summer houses in the Mediterranean. The island’s villas for sale have proven to be a very savvy investment, since their values are steadily growing over the past few years, while also offering significant gross yields of approximately 8% on an annual basis.

Among Crete’s primary visitors are people from Germany, with British a close second, while both of them are traditional buyers of real estate in the island. Crete is the biggest island of Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean, home to a population of 623,065 people, with an are of 8,303 sq. km and a coastline of 1,045 kms. With its famous volcano and the exotic landscape, which it created, acting as reference points, Santorini is home to one of the most popular destination of Greece and the Cycladic islands’ complex. Access to island is possible by ship (the trip can last from 4 and up to 9 hours, depending on the ferry type), or by airplane, with the flight lasting about 40 minutes. The island’s population stands at 15,250 people, while it has an area of 76.19 sq. km.
Santorini’s two main settlements are Fira and Oia. It’s worth noting that some of the Caldera’s properties for sale offer unique characteristics and as such, are valued accordingly. Those properties are “dug into” the rock of the Caldera (opposite the volcano) and offer a once-in-a lifetime experience of stay to the visitor, or owner.

Chalkidiki’s area is 2,918 sq. km. and its population stands at 105,908 people. The capital city is Poligiros.
